ITC - the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation - offers courses in Applied Earth Sciences (including disaster studies e.g. floods, landslides, earthquakes) , water resource management, natural resources, urban planning, earth opbeservation and geo-information science.

The EMMA program profides funding opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff to take part in ‘mobilities’ between the target group countries and the EU. The programme offers study scholarships to attend courses at Master of Science level, pursue PhDs, Post Doctoral research and to facilitate academic staff exchange.

MATHEMATICAL INSTITUTE AND ST ANNE’S COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

STUDENTSHIP covers fees (University and College) and maintenance.

Applications are invited for a postgraduate studentship, funded by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Global Research Partnership [KAUST GRP], to work on “Mathematical models of spatially coherent brain states” under the supervision of Prof Paul Bressloff. This DPhil studentship will start on 1 October 2009, is available to all nationalities, covers maintenance and full overseas fees and will be based in the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM).
OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, will be allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five years the centre will employ over 40 new staff and students.

Our primary goal is to understand the role of neural circuitry in generating spatially coherent activity states in the cerebral cortex. One of the striking features of the cortex is that there are distinct neural circuits acting on different spatial scales. There are very short-range circuits that bundle neurons into coherent modules known as columns, local inter-columnar circuits that are responsible for local sensory processing, long-range circuits that carry out spatial integration across multiple features, and feedback circuits that mediate attentional signals from higher brain regions. We will incorporate these multi-scale anatomical structures into a mathematical model of cortex. This will take the form of a system of integrodifferential equations whose integral kernels represent the spatial distribution of the synaptic connections between neurons at the various spatial scales. Solutions of these equations will determine the spatiotemporal patterns of spontaneous and stimulus-evoked neural activity across the cortex.

We will extend analytical methods developed for nonlinear PDE models of diffusively coupled excitable systems in order to derive conditions for the existence and stability of coherent activity states in our nonlocal neural model. Techniques will include multi-scale analysis, (symmetric) bifurcation theory and singular perturbation theory. A challenging aspect of the analysis will be to incorporate the effects of noise and network heterogeneities. The mathematical aspects of the work will also have broader impact on a variety of population-based biological systems, in which the basic elements at the molecular, cellular or organismal level interact nonlocally in space. Such systems are typically described in terms of integrodifferential equations, which cannot be reduced to equivalent finite-order differential equations, except for very restricted choices of the interaction kernels.

The collaborators on this project are Dr. Alessandra Angelucci (Department of Ophthalmology, University of Utah) and Dr. Ole Paulsen (Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Oxford).

ADB - Japan Scholarship Program, School of International Health University of Tokyo

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan. It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region. The ADB-JSP enrolls about 300 students annually in 20 academic institutions located in 10 countries within the Region.

PhD Studentship “Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites”
Space Advanced Research Team, Department of Aerospace Engineering

The Space Advanced Research Team at the University of Glasgow is currently seeking a PhD student to investigate the “Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites”

The project consists of the design and development of femto-satellites with a volume of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm and a weight of approximately 10 grams. These very tiny satellites are expected to be mainly made of stacked silicon microchips. Some microchips will be responsible for very specific tasks necessary for the survival of the mission (for example, communication, attitude control, etc.), whereas other microchips will form the scientific payload (for example, embedded microcameras, radiation detectors, etc.) These femto-satellites have the potential to drastically lower the costs of space missions and increase the frequency of the launches. Furthermore, the possibility of having a huge number of femto-satellites (more than 1,000) at a reasonable manufacturing price (less than £200 each) will increase the overall mission reliability (losing some of them will not jeopardize the overall mission objectives). It will also allow the conception of new mission scenarios and the assembly of large structures in space consisting of thousands of small elements (for example, interferometric antenna arrays, synthetic aperture radars, etc.) The doctoral student selected for this project will have to take into account not only the design trade-offs of present microelectronic technology, but also the mission design and analysis trade-offs applicable to space applications. In this process, it is expected that the doctoral student will be able to produce some advances in the state-of-the-art of this interdisciplinary field of research since the present design rules of small satellites cannot be directly applied to the design and development of femto-satellites due to the severe constraints in size and power consumption.

The PhD candidate for this post will hold an upper 1st class degree in either aerospace engineering or electrical & electronics engineering. The successful applicant will have good analytical and modelling skills, and good knowledge of microprocessors and/or space mission analysis and design. Enthusiasm and determination in exploring original ideas as well as good team spirit are desirable qualities of the successful candidate. A very good spoken and written English is essential.

Each Scholarship will run for 4 years, cover all tuition fees (EU or overseas) and provide the successful student with a stipend at the Research Council recommended rates (£12,940 for 2008/09). On top of this the project benefits from £5,300 per year research costs.

The project will start between January 2009 and April 2009.

Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and local governance issues.
The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren (Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled `Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia`. The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on environmental issues in the context of conservation and development programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity and sustainability outcomes.
The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision determined by the focus and site of each student`s component of the project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research, while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building, conservation and development projects are being conducted.

a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a relevant social science field;
advanced fluency in Indonesian language;
field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience;
